This analysis proves that the level of BPA found in the athletes' urine was directly related to the levels observed in their bodies during the performance of the sport they had been selected to compete in. Objectives: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis regarding the efficacy and safety of inhaled corticosteroids for COPD exacerbations. Material and methods: We searched EMBASE, Embase or the Cochrane Library, to November 2011, using the terms "collapsible airway" and "collapsible airway management" or "collapsible airway medication." We conducted a qualitative and quantitative literature review using the PsycINFO database (www.psycinfo.ca). Results: A search strategy in PubMed and the Cochrane Library identified 22 RCTs that reported on the effects of inhaled corticosteroids on acute bronchospasm, as well as 13 RCTs reporting on the effects of inhaled corticosteroids on pulmonary oedema and the efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and angina pectoris. A meta-analysis showed that inhaled corticosteroids were associated with significantly reduced rates of exacerbations. There was no statistically significant difference in rates of exacerbations between inhaled corticosteroids and inhaled nonrenal corticosteroid medications: the most commonly used inhalants were the nonrenal corticosteroids. The meta-analysis did not identify any studies in older patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using inhaled corticosteroids compared with inhaled nonrenal corticosteroids. Conclusion: Despite the absence of randomised, double blind randomized controlled trials for inhalant medication for COPD, inhaled corticosteroids are safe and effective for relieving pulmonary obstructions.
